A single-herb liquid extract of dried berry of Zanthoxylum simulans, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Szechuan pepper is not pepper and not chilli, and what it does is not heat. The husk carries hydroxy-alpha-sanshool, which acts directly on the nerve endings in the lip and tongue and produces a distinct buzzing numbness at a frequency people describe as a light electric vibration. Only the reddish husk is used; the hard black seed inside is gritty and is sieved out. The plant is a spiny Chinese shrub of the citrus family.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Szechuan pepper produces a tingling numbness of the lips and tongue; that is what it does and it is not an adverse reaction, but take it well diluted. Not suitable if you have stomach or duodenal ulcers or reflux. It belongs to the citrus family — avoid it if you react to that family. Not for use in pregnancy in more than culinary amounts.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
